April 2006

Dear Bartholomew County Resident:

We are proud to introduce an updated edition to the Club and Civic Organization Directory.  We hope that this guide will prove useful to current and new residents of Bartholomew County who are looking for adult socialization and community engagement.  Use this guide to make connections with local special interest groups, service organizations, and civic clubs that are open to the public for membership.

Heritage Fund - the Community Foundation of Bartholomew County initiated and funded this directory as a response to findings of the Welcoming Community Project conducted in 2004.  The research project was designed to assess the welcoming factor in Bartholomew County among various groups of people – with a focus on “the creative class” or professional worker.  The research project found that many newcomers and current residents experienced difficulties accessing information about the community.  Those who were able to join service groups and clubs felt a connection to the community, which helped them establish roots and long-term residency in our county.

The editors believe the directory will be a great resource for Bartholomew County residents.  It was compiled using information gathered from the 67 organizations that responded to our requests for information.  We realize the listing is incomplete and many other organizations exist that could be included in future editions.

Please let us know if you find this directory to be helpful either as an individual seeking ways to become engaged in the community or as an organization seeking new members or volunteers.  Based on community response, our goal is to update this directory each year.  Please let us know if your club or civic organization would like to be included in the next edition.  We have included an application form at the back of the directory, which can be used for new registrations or to update information for a current listing.  The directory is also available online at http://www.firstcallforhelp211.org

The directory is organized in the following sections:

·        Alphabetical listing of organization names.

·        Subject index.  If you have a particular interest but don’t know what’s available, look here first.

·        Detailed information about each organization.  Note that the group listings include only a sampling of major projects and events.  Contact the group for complete information.

Sincerely,
